The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, together with the representatives of the Kolubara District Women’s Association (ŽUKO), held a workshop for the students of the Center for Professional Development in Leskovac on the topic of equality in property inheritance.
Janković introduced high school students to the work of the Commissioner’s institution and the concept of discrimination, and explained, through practical examples, what forms it can take and how the protection mechanism works. Special emphasis was placed on the right to inheritance, which women in Serbia still often renounce in favor of male family members, without knowledge of the consequences that such a decision can produce.
Real estate ownership is an important condition for women to be more independent and secure because if they do not have property, it can affect their economic independence, the exercise of certain social rights, and the risk of various forms of family and gender-based violence.
The workshops are held within the project “How much is my share?” with the support of the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) through the program “Social inclusion and poverty reduction in Serbia”.
