Regarding complaints procedures initiated upon complaints filed on account of inaccessibility of certain facilities, which were successfully concluded by mediation at the proposal of the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality Brankica Jankovic, the Commissioner met with the representatives of the Center for Independent Living of Persons with Disabilities, the City Election Commission, city municipalities of Vračar and Savski venac.

 

Namely, the Center for the Independent Living of Persons with Disabilities submitted to the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality complaint on account of inaccessibility of certain facilities that were designated as polling stations during the most recent city elections. Subsequently, the Commissioner’s proposal for mediation was accepted and it transpired that it was in fact a good and effective mechanism for resolving disputes.

 

According to her, the Agreement on understanding was important step in ensuring accessibility of both polling stations and adapted electoral material as it is a prerequisite for an independent and equal participation of persons with disabilities in political and public life.

 

We believe that this good example of cooperation on such an important issue, such as the accessibility of facilities, will encourage other municipalities and organizations to pay greater attention to solving this problem, said Commissioner Janković.
