Gender equality in higher education

Women in Serbia are still at a disadvantage compared to men and this is visible in the labor market, in participation in decision-making, distribution of jobs, wages, in the economic sphere and education.  That is why it is important that at universities the issue of gender equality receives the attention it deserves, because universities, in addition to being places for acquiring knowledge, must also be places to raise awareness of conscious and unconscious gender biases and prejudices, said Commissioner Brankica Janković, at the presentation of the Research on views on gender equality in  higher education institutions conducted by Singidunum University in collaboration with colleagues from France, CY Cergy Paris University.

The Commissioner reminded that in 2018, the Commissioner sent an initiative to the National Council for Higher Education and proposed the introduction of a gender perspective in the accreditation procedure of higher education institutions.  Although the initiative was supported, this practice is still not obligatory, which is why every self-initiated effort of each university is important, either through conducting a research or by adopting a document on gender equality, as in the case with Singidunum University or the University of Belgrade, said Janković.

It is of great importance for the whole society that gender equality in the full sense of the word comes to life at the University, and that the University is essentially committed to the prohibition of discrimination and any form of gender inequality, because new generations are growing in higher education institutions – generations on whom it depends whether in the future we will have a society free of traditional, patriarchal and gender prejudices and stereotypes limiting women.
