Commissioner on the impact of digital technologies and artificial intelligence on human rights

Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, spoke at the opening of the regional conference “Digital 2023”, which deals with trends in telecommunications and media.

At the event, which brings together market leaders, experts in telecommunications and all types of media, and all the leaders of the industries that drive the economy in Serbia, the Commissioner spoke about the impact of digital technologies and artificial intelligence on human rights.

“We are witnessing tectonic shifts in the field of development of digital technologies, attempts to rein in and steer their development in the direction in which they will serve humanity as much as possible while having as few negative consequences for society as possible, not only when it comes to equality, but in general, for the entire social fabric and cohesion”, said the Commissioner.

Janković pointed out that the role of everyone, both administrative bodies and independent institutions, the private sector and the academic community, as well as the civil sector, is to ensure that the fire that has appeared becomes a catalyst for social progress and well-being, and not a fire surge that will destroy the fragile fabric of our societies. The Commissioner reminded that Serbia is working hard to improve the legal framework that will contribute to the improvement of human rights in the digital sphere, including the right to equality, and that the proposal for the EU Artificial Intelligence Regulation will play a significant role in equality bodies, which faces us also with the important task to prepare for its application.
