The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, visited the Adria Media Group, upon an invitation from this media house, where she held a discussion with representatives of the editorial staff and management on current topics regarding the respect and violation of human rights, the role of the media in combating discrimination, the state of the media and the space for improving existing practices, as well as on all other important social issues and trends.
“Being the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, every citizen is important to me, as well as that they are properly informed about the rights they have and ways to protect them. We should jointly create a society in which ordinary person is not afraid to report the violation of their rights, but rather those who violate them should be afraid and answerable. Every individual in the society should know what their basic human rights are and whom to turn to when needed. Citizens should know that discrimination based on gender, age, disability, health status, national and religious affiliation, and other personal characteristics is prohibited. The media, which are ready to report in the proper way in the interest of the citizens, are valuable allies on the way to creating a society in which equality, tolerance, and mutual understanding are respected”, Commissioner Janković pointed out.
For the institution of the Commissioner, Adria Media Group’s invitation for cooperation represents a good intention in an effort to put “ordinary people”, who are mostly on the margins of media interest, in the focus of reporting, because often other topics, unjustifiably, take precedence. It is important that such a large media group, which integrates different platforms, shows its willingness to work on improving reporting on these issues.
Adria Media Group business was presented by the Company President, Igor Žeželj, and his team: Ana Aleksić, Petar Jevremović, Ruža Ristanović Veljović, Aleksandar Đondović, Petar Jeremić, and Irena Petrović. During the visit, the Commissioner and her team visited the editorial offices of print and web editions, as well as television, where the activities and goals of the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality in the coming period were presented.
