Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković said that Serbia has demonstrated that it respects international laws and fosters values of human and tolerant society, but that there were individual instances of a lack of understanding and prejudices of parents whose children should attend school in Šid together with migrant and refugee children.
Children are one of the most vulnerable social groups, in particular children who have experienced horrors of war and family separation, while some have even lost those closest to them. Schools play an important role in their adaptation and empowerment as a place where children learn, inter alia, values of tolerance, mutual respect and acceptance of diversity, says Commissioner Janković.
The Commissioner said that she expected that in this case conditions would be created for exercising rights to education.
