Acting within the competences prescribed by law to monitor the implementation of laws concerning the prohibition of discrimination and recommend to public authorities and other persons measures to achieve equality (Article 33, items 7 and 9 of the Law on the Prohibition of Discrimination, “Official Gazette of the RS,” Nos. 22/2009 and 52/2021), the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality sends the Municipality of Zvezdara this

RECOMMENDATION OF MEASURES FOR ACHIEVING EQUALITY AND PROTECTION AGAINST DISCRIMINATION

The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality recommends to the City Municipality of Zvezdara:

– to refrain from the forced eviction of the residents of the Roma settlement in Bulevar Kralja Aleksandra Street 403-405 until alternative accommodation is previously provided which meets the criteria of adequate housing following domestic and international standards,

– to carry out the entire process of taking care of the inhabitants of the Roma settlement with the active participation of those persons, respecting their needs and the right to participate in decision-making regarding issues that concern them, including resettlement and the method of social integration, following international standards and guidelines for the displacement of citizens from informal settlements.

The City Municipality of Zvezdara will inform the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality about the measures taken no later than 30 days after receiving this recommendation.
