The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, met with the Regional Director of UN Women for Europe and Central Asia, Alia El-Yassir, with whom she discussed the promotion of equality and the protection of women from discrimination, as well as the institution’s planned activities in this field.
The Commissioner pointed out that in previous years, Serbia has taken significant steps to increase the participation of women in political and public life, thanks to which it was in 10th place in Europe regarding the representation of women. Janković added that, in addition, we should work on improving the socio-economic position of women through their empowerment and various types of systemic support, as well as the suppression of all forms of domestic violence.
A specific topic of the meeting was the long-standing successful cooperation between the Commissioner and UN Women, including the ongoing project aimed at improving the position of women and girls in rural areas. The meeting also discussed future projects aimed at specific support for the most vulnerable categories of women.
Alia El-Yassir assessed that the Commissioner has excellent cooperation with UN Women in Serbia and highlighted the institution’s role in promoting equality in strategically important areas, such as economic empowerment, elimination of violence against women, management, and participation in public life.
