Following the events at the Pančevo City Assembly and the insults directed at assembly member Tamara Maksić, the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Milan Antonijević, condemns sexist insults and the humiliation of women, particularly in institutions that should serve as examples of respect for dignity and a culture of dialogue.
Political disagreements and heated debates are an integral part of democratic life, but they cannot justify gender-based insults and degrading sexual innuendos. Such language does not affect only the woman at whom it is directed, but also contributes to creating an atmosphere that may discourage women from participating equally in political and public life.
The Commissioner calls on all participants in political life to express their disagreements through arguments and with mutual respect and reminds them that the dignity of every individual must be protected, regardless of political affiliation.
