Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, attended the seminar “Labor Disputes in Practice” of the Republic Agency for the Peaceful Settlement of Labor Disputes and, on that occasion, pointed out that labor relations have become complex and that it is important for citizens to know whom they can address and in what ways they can protect their rights.
The Commissioner’s practice shows that citizens are most sensitive to discrimination precisely in the field of work and employment, which is why a Special Report on the state of equality in this area was prepared in 2019.
“Practice shows that multiple discrimination is most prevalent in relation to women, due to their gender, marital and family status, most often in the employment process or in the workplace, as well as discrimination against women with disabilities and Roma women”, the Commissioner stated.
Bearing in mind the above, the Commissioner initiated several strategic lawsuits related to the field of work and employment, among which are lawsuits due to discrimination based on gender, marital and family status, and calling to account, and lawsuits due to discrimination based on health status in the field of work.
Using its competencies, in previous years the Commissioner sent recommendations for measures to achieve equality to the National Employment Service, courts in connection with the promotion of women civil servants who were absent from work due to pregnancy, maternity, or child care leave, as well as to those who deal with advertising not to publish job advertisements that contain discriminatory employment conditions.
