Commissioner at the meeting with representatives of Association of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Individuals

Commissioner for the Protection of Equality Brankica Jankovic met with representatives of Association of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Individuals (SGNS) with whom she discussed their position and possibilities to improve it.

Working and legal status of court interpreters for sign language, position of deaf sportspersons who are not included in Paralympic Committee of Serbia, payment method to notaries for documents verification, list of medical aid devices, as well as accessibility of SOS phone lines such are police, ambulance and fire brigade, are the most urgent problems for deaf and hard-of-hearing persons, which were presented to Commissioner during the meeting. They emphasized that persons who are both deaf and blind are facing the biggest problems.

Commissioner stressed the importance to include those citizens more intensively in all areas of life and that it is essential to develop additional social services and particularly to improve sign language interpreter service in order to provide translation in all situations when necessary.

She said that institution of Commissioner will continue to try to perceive their problems and assist within its competencies to find solution and to improve the position of deaf and hard-of-hearing persons.
