Numerous editors of local television stations, members of association New Networks of Serbia, attended the promotion of journalist manuals „Fight for Equality“ and „Media, Gender and Security“, published by Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, with support of OSCE Mission in Serbia.
Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, stated at the promotion opening that media have huge influence in creation of public opinion and that they are important partners of institution of Commissioner in combating discrimination. We believe that most of journalists wish to contribute to building of better and more equal society, so these manuals can be a precious tool and help them in reporting on issues related to human rights, equality and achievement of tolerance, stressed Commissioner Janković and added that these manuals are unique, not only in Serbia, but in whole Europe.
OSCE Mission Ambassador in Serbia, Andrea Orizio, said that media play key role in rising awareness on discrimination and strengthening of tolerant and equal society and praised cooperation with Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, materialized through publishing of these two manuals, as well. President of Obrenovac City Assembly, Miroslav Čučković, expressed his satisfaction with fact that promotion was held in Obrenovac, city that is well known on tolerance to different social groups, but also on problematic reporting of some media about consequences of the flood in 2014.
Head of Office of the Commissioner for Protection of Equality, Antigona Andonov, one of the authors, presented manual „Fight for Equality“ and some of typical cases from the Commissioner’s practice in area of media reporting. Within this manual, a glossary of tolerance is included, containing anti-discriminatory and gender-sensitive terms with explanations.
Promotion was also attended by representatives of local civil society organizations that deal with position of vulnerable social groups.
