On the occasion of the World AIDS Day, 1 December, Commissioner for the Protection of Equality Brankica Jankovic reminds that persons who live with HIV and AIDS are still exposed to discrimination in almost all areas of life and that their problems are practically invisible in public.
Commissioner emphasizes that it is necessary to take all available measures in order to provide equal rights to health and social care, education, employment and dignified life for the members of this vulnerable social group, noting that results of the survey on the attitude of Serbian citizens to discrimination displayed that there is a great social distance towards this marginalized group.
We must not tolerate that these people are living under the burden of prejudices because of ignorance and insufficient information, forced to hide their health condition in order to avoid confrontation with fear and rejection in their environment, concludes Commissioner Jankovic.
