On the occasion of the World Alheimer’s Day, the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality Brankica Janković said that caring for our elderly citizens is a moral imperative for each society, while special attention must be given to all those individuals in need of certain types of protection, in particular to those suffering from the Alzheimer’s disease.
She stressed that support is necessary to families of persons suffering from this disease, but that professional staff caring for the elderly should receive additional training and education. The Commissioner added that inadequate response of the society and lack of support could result in discrimination which is the first step leading to violence.
There are 200,000 people living with Alzheimer’s disease in Serbia, while half of all people over 80 are at risk of Alzheimer’s. This is the reason the Belgrade Gerontology Center and “Alzheimer” Association have installed a maze at Trg republike Square offering citizens an opportunity to get a glimpse of what it is like to live with the Alzheimer’s disease.
