Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, warned that there were two brutal attacks against transgender persons in the last 10 days and that she expected that the authorities would find and apprehend the perpetrators.
Commissioner said that physical violence represents the most drastic violation of human rights and is the end result discrimination of certain groups. Every type of violence, harassment, threats and hate speech is intolerable and forbidden. Members of trans-community are an extremely vulnerable group that is often exposed to different forms of discrimination, finding the exercise of their rights in various segments of life impossible.
All relevant authorities must take all appropriate measures to ensure that transgender and transsexual persons can live without fear for their safety, while every citizen has the responsibility to react and help the victim, stressed Commissioner Janković.
