The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, welcomed the publication of the first books intended for the new master’s study program Law and Gender at the Faculty of Law of the University of Belgrade, issued as part of the international project LAWGEM, in the work of which the institution of the Commissioner has participated from the very beginning. Janković assessed that it is extremely important for law students to be educated in a gender-sensitive manner because this represents an investment in better creation and application of laws, with the aim of equally respecting and protecting the rights of every individual, regardless of gender and other personal characteristics.
The LAWGEM project is implemented within the strategic partnership of the Faculty of Law of the University of Belgrade and a consortium of experts from law faculties from Italy, Sweden, Germany, and Spain.
The Gender-Competent Legal Education textbook is the result of the joint work of authors from five different European universities, coordinated by Professor Dragica Vujadinović, who is also a co-author. Also, the book Feminist Approaches to Law – Theoretical and Historical Insights was published, the first of the planned four books within the Gender Perspectives in Law series, edited by Professor Dragica Vujadinović and Professor Ivana Krstić. The papers in this volume deal with various topics related to feminist political theories, feminist movements, critical legal history, queer theories, as well as issues related to constitutional democracy and democratic theories in general. The ultimate goal is gender equality – its clarification, articulation, and promotion in legal theory and practice.
