Acting within the framework of legally prescribed competencies to monitor the implementation of laws concerning the prohibition of discrimination and to recommend measures to achieve equality to the public authorities and other persons (Art. 33, para. 1, items 7 and 9 of the Law on the Prohibition of Discrimination, “Official Gazette of RS”, No. 22/2009), the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality addresses to the City of Niš the following

RECOMMENDATION ON MEASURES TO ACHIEVE EQUALITY

1. The City of Niš will, without delay, take all necessary measures to ensure that members of the Roma national minority who are displaced from the settlements next to “Belvil” in New Belgrade and placed in a warehouse in Daničićeva street in Niš, are provided with housing that meets international standards of housing in the alternative accommodation for citizens who are displaced from informal settlements.
2. The City of Nis will implement the process of care and integration of the displaced members of the Roma national minority, in cooperation and with the active participation of displaced persons, respecting their needs and their right to participate in decision-making in relation to all issues that concern them, including relocation and the way of social integration, in accordance with international standards and guidelines for displacement of citizens from informal settlements.
3. The City of Niš will notify the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality of the measures taken, no later than 30 days from the date of receipt of this recommendation.
