Commissioner for the Protection of Equality Brankica Jankovic discussed with Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muiznieks about the state in the area of respecting human rights and improvement of the equality.
The topics of discussion were the role and mandate of the independent institutions in protecting human rights, as well as the planned activities aimed at the improvement of the position of the most vulnerable social groups. Commissioners agreed that inclusion of Roma children and children with disabilities in the educational system is a great challenge for the society, that it is necessary to make additional efforts to overcome barriers, and one of the ways is to provide personal assistants to children who really need them.
Commissioner Jankovic presented the work of Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, especially proceeding upon the complaints, initiation of strategic litigation, recommendations of measures to achieve equality and warnings to the public, and introduced him to the most important plans of the institution for the upcoming period.
Commissioner Muiznijeks expressed full support to the institution of Commissioner for the Protection of Equality in order to suppress discrimination more efficiently and to allow all citizens to enjoy equal rights.
Other attendants of this meeting were Deputy Director of Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Ozgur Derman, Deputy Chief of the Council of Europe Mission Irina Sahakian Veter, Advisor to Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Erliha Bicakcic and Assistant Commissioner for the Protection of Equality Mirjana Kecman.
