Brankica Janković, the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality met with Nebojša Stefanović, Minister of Internal Affairs. Main topics of discussion were related to further implementation of mutual activities aimed at improving equality of Serbian citizens. In particular, they discussed extending the training for the police officers „Detecting and Addressing Discrimination“ organized by the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality and OSCE Mission in Serbia, that yielded significant results in protection of citizens, especially those from minority and marginalized groups.
„Public opinion surveys reveal that citizens have confidence in the institution of Commissioner and the police in their fight against discrimination, so the proper response is of great importance in the work of the employees in the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Thanks to good cooperation, progress is tangible and is demonstrated by the interest shown by police officers during the training as well as by the awareness on the importance of improving protection of human rights in our society, “said Commissioner Janković. Minister Stefanović stressed the significance of high quality cooperation between the Ministry and the institution of the Commissioner, highlighting the progress in specific areas of police work under increased risk of discrimination. Training of police officers is very important for police work in the community and closer relations with citizens, said Stefanović. That is why the Ministry of Internal Affairs will continue to support trainings that will be implemented with the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, leading to greater efficiency of police and better protection of citizens, said the Minister.
