Having in mind the importance of protection against any form of violence in the labor market, especially protection of women who belong to one of the most vulnerable groups, Commissioner for the Protection of Equality Brankica Jankovic supported the initiative of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Serbia to ratify Convention No. 190 of the International Labor Organization on ending violence and harassment in the world of work, as soon as possible.
That is why one of the recommendations of Commissioner for the Protection of Equality given in the Regular Annual Report, which is submitted to the National Assembly of Serbia, also recommends that measures stated in the Convention should be confirmed as soon as possible. Namely, Convention No. 190 is a comprehensive international document that deals with the problem of violence and harassment at work, referring to all workers and other persons, all sectors and all places of work and residence of workers. It also indicates specific characteristics, shapes and negative consequences of violence in the world of work and applies to both private and public sectors.
Bearing in mind that women in the labor market are often exposed to gender-based violence and
discrimination, it is important to improve the protection mechanisms, says Commissioner adding that the Convention defines in detail the measures and mechanisms for the prevention of violence and harassment, starting from prevention, identification, taking prevention measures to the controlling mechanisms.
Although most of the provisions of Convention no. 190 are already part of the national legislation,
Commissioner Jankovic points out that ratification of this convention would be important for Serbia as a democratic society of social justice.
