Commissioner for the Protection of Equality Brankica Jankovic met with Ambassador of the United States of America Kyle Scott, on the occasion of the International Women‘s Day.
They discussed further European integration of Serbia and achieving of the goals from Chapter 23. related to respecting of human rights and equality of all social groups, as well as the process of amending the existing legislative frame for the protection against discrimination. The significance of the independent institutions role and importance of Commissioner’s work and contribution to the improvement of equality in all areas of social life were emphasized during the meeting.
Ambassador and Commissioner particularly discussed the improvement of women’s position in our society, while Ambassador was interested in Commissioner’s attitudes regarding the enactment of the Law on Gender Equality. The importance of strengthening of capacities and empowerment of women at local level was stressed, together with activities that should be undertaken in this direction.
Ambassador Scott supported the work of Commissioner for the Protection of Equality and expressed the willingness for cooperation in further strengthening of the institution. He also noted support by the US Government and USAID for programs that promote equality in Serbia, including the institution of Commissioner for the Protection of Equality.
