Respecting human rights of older citizens means their true involvement in the community at all levels and in all areas, and the government must provide them with continuous support and, where necessary, assistance in exercising rights and the use of services, stated the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality Brankica Janković at a seminar in Kanjiža, organized to promote the quality of life of the elderly.
The Commissioner pointed out that older people are at an increased risk of discrimination, facing poverty and exclusion, and that they are not rare cases of neglect and abuse, and that access to health, social and other services in rural areas is further impeded. These circumstances should be given special attention, said Commissioner Janković.
The first professional and scientific conference with international participation on the topic “Improving the quality of life of the elderly – daily services in the community” was organized by the Association of Employers of Social Protection Institutions for the elderly and adults of Vojvodina with the support of the Provincial Secretariat for Social Policy, Demography and Gender Equality and the Provincial Institute for social protection.
