Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Milan Antonijević, participated in the 15th International Meeting of Special Envoys and Coordinators Combating Antisemitism (SECCA) in Dublin.
At the introductory roundtable, dedicated to preserving and improving community life amid growing intolerance and security challenges, discussions focused on the protection of human rights, combating discrimination and creating a society in which everyone can live freely, with dignity and without fear of hatred and violence.
During the discussion, Antonijević emphasized that the exchange of experiences and cooperation between institutions and communities are of crucial importance for building a society based on equality, mutual respect and appreciation of diversity. During the meeting, particular attention was devoted to content published on online platforms, methods of content moderation, online safety and the challenges posed by new technologies.
The Commissioner visited the TikTok Transparency and Accountability Center and also held separate discussions with representatives of Meta. Through practical insights into the operation of digital platforms, the Commissioner gained a deeper understanding of content moderation systems, the application of community guidelines, the role of automated technologies and human assessment, as well as procedures for identifying and removing content that incites antisemitism, hate speech and discrimination.
Considering the influence of digital platforms on access to information, communication and the shaping of public opinion, understanding how they operate is also important for improving the institutional response to discrimination. The same tools that enable the rapid dissemination of information and connect people can also be used to spread prejudice and intolerance, but also to promote tolerance, equality and respect for diversity. A safer online environment requires accountability from platforms, transparent and effective moderation systems, as well as cooperation between institutions, technology companies and society as a whole.
