The right to health is one of the fundamental human rights, while the availability of healthcare, including access to modern therapies, represents an important aspect of the exercise of the right to equality. At the same time, the Public Health Strategy in the Republic of Serbia 2018–2026 places particular emphasis on equality and ensuring universal accessibility of healthcare, especially for citizens who are at increased risk of discrimination.

The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Milan Antonijević, and Assistant Commissioner Mirjana Kecman met with the Director of the National Health Insurance Fund, Professor Sanja Radojević Škodrić, with whom they discussed improving cooperation with the aim of ensuring access to effective therapies, medicines and medical aids covered by the Fund, particularly for persons suffering from rare and chronic diseases.

The most important topics discussed concerned the use of innovative medicines and the expansion of indications for the use of certain medicines in accordance with the latest scientific findings and recommendations, greater availability of medicines for the treatment of cystic fibrosis and biological therapies for rheumatology patients, as well as ensuring access to the most advanced sensors for persons with type 1 diabetes.
