On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, representatives of the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Milan Nikolić and Miljana Borić, held an interactive workshop with eighth-grade students of the “Miloš Crnjanski” Elementary School from Žabalj. The workshop was organized in cooperation with the Office for Roma Inclusion, with the active participation of the school’s principal, Ljiljana Mihajlović, and was held at the premises of the Municipal Public Library “Veljko Petrović” in Žabalj.
Through discussion and interactive activities, students learned how to recognize discrimination, how to protect themselves if they encounter it, and why it is important not to remain silent in the face of injustice. The discussion addressed various forms of discrimination that can arise from national affiliation, skin color, gender, language, poverty, disability, and other personal characteristics.
Working with children is particularly important, as it is at this age that attitudes and values are shaped, which will later influence social relationships. By teaching them about equality, tolerance, and mutual respect, we are building the foundations of a society where everyone has equal rights and opportunities, regardless of differences.
The observance of this day serves as a reminder of the need for a continuous fight against discrimination. Education and institutions that promote equality and the protection of human rights play a key role in this process. As an independent institution, the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality strives, through such educational activities, to empower the youngest members of society and encourage them to become drivers of positive change.
