Commissioner in a Workshop for Empowering Women with Disabilities

Women with disabilities are exposed to multiple discrimination, on grounds of disability and gender, as it was also specified in a practice of Commissioner, which marginalizes them as a group, said Commissioner for Protection of Equality Brankica Jankovic at the opening of the workshop “Capacity building of women with disabilities for greater participation in managerial positions in organizations of persons with disabilities and women’s organizations. ”

Emphasizing the significance of such activities, implemented jointly by the Center for the Independent Living of Persons with Disabilities and UN Women Serbia, Jankovic said that the survey, that was also conducted, is the first and indispensable step in collecting of accurate data about the number of associations of persons with disabilities as well as women’s organizations and scans of current situation and problems, as a prerequisite for creating quality policies and active support measures.

Referring to the results of the survey that showed that number of women at managerial and managerial positions in the mentioned organizations is very small, the Commissioner emphasized that it is necessary to provide them with initial support, encouragement, education and adequate services in order to be able to act actively in everyday life and also achieve leadership positions.

Other speakers at the meeting were also Director of the Office for Human and Minority Rights, Suzana Paunović, as well as the representatives of several associations of persons with disabilities and women’s civil society organizations.
