Commissioner at the international conference on portraying woman in media

Commissioner for the Protection of Equality Brankica Jankovic took part at the conference “Portrait of Woman in Media”, organized by First Women’s Club, where she spoke at the panel dedicated to current issues related to the conference topic.

Woman is present in media in many different ways, but often in a discriminatory manner, stated Commissioner and stressed that media are important factor in the promotion of gender equality in our still dominantly patriarchal society, where it is not easy to fulfill the gender roles expectations. It is therefore necessary to work on the promotion of the partnership of women and men, as the only correct concept, concluded Commissioner.

Speaking about discrimination during work and employment, Commissioner stated that discrimination is still greatest in case of women who recently gave birth, upon their return to work after maternity leave. She stated that institution of Commissioner produced Code of Equality for employers that contains directives for achievement of full equality of employees and stressed that it is necessary to ensure full respect of legal provisions and rights of all participants at the labor market.

The conference gathered a great number of successful women and men from different areas, among which were Minister without portfolio in charge for demographic and population policy Slavica Djukic Dejanovic, MP Marija Obradovic, vice president of Delta Holdinga Marija Desivojevic, owner of Color Press Group Robert Coban, coordinator of Safe House Vesna Stanojevic and many others.
