Winners of the National Moot Court Competition Announced

Teams from the Faculty of Law of the University of Novi Sad won first and second place at the traditional “Moot Court” competition, a simulation of trial in the field of protection from discrimination for final-year law students, which was held for the 11th time and organized by the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality. Jovana Radak from the Faculty of Law, University of Novi Sad, was declared the best speaker, while the team from the Faculty of Law in Niš won in the category of the best written submission. The topic of the moot court was discrimination in the digital sphere based on nationality.

Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, congratulated the awarded students and stated that she is pleased that future lawyers participate in this competition every year, thereby demonstrating their determination to improve their knowledge in the field of non-discrimination and human rights. By facing practical problems, our students learn that justice and equality are not just abstract concepts, but a living and necessary reality that we must defend every day. We believe that some of you will one day take the place of judges in this competition, as leading experts in the field of equality in Serbia, said the Commissioner.

The judges were: former President of the Constitutional Court Bosa Nenadić, former President of the Supreme Court Vida Petrović Škero, Judge of the Higher Court in Belgrade Nebojša Đuričić, President of the Lawyers’ Committee for Human Rights Katarina Golubović/”Justice for All” project and Director of the RNIDS Foundation Dejan Đukić.

“Moot court” is the only competition of this type in Europe in the field of discrimination and consists of drafting a lawsuit and a response to the lawsuit, as well as simulating a hearing, based on a given case from the practice of the Commissioner. This year, 11 teams from accredited law schools across Serbia applied for the competition. The competition was supported by the Serbian National Internet Domain Registry Foundation (RINDS) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The aim of this competition is to contribute to the development of legal education in this field and to the advancement of equality in the Republic of Serbia.
