On the occasion of the song performed by the actor and member of the PSG presidency, Sergej Trifunović, and members of the Movement of United Phantoms, in which, among others, the Prime Minister of Serbia is insulted on the basis of sexual orientation, the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, points out that humor cannot be a justification to offend anyone because of some personal characteristic.
The Commissioner emphasizes that disparagement of members of, not only the LGBT community, but of all minority and religious communities, must not be the subject of attempts at humor, satire, or sarcastic comments, as this encourages intolerance towards the other and the different.
Disagreement and criticism, even in the form of humor, are legitimate and useful, but not if they refer to a personal characteristic that is an important part of an individual’s identity. By respecting other people’s differences, we also show how much we respect ourselves and what we fight for and stand for, Janković concluded.
