The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, condemns the demolition of the memorial that stood on the site where the Synagogue in Sremska Mitrovica was 80 years ago. The desecration of landmarks that remind us of the suffering of Jews in a country that suffered great sacrifices in the fight against fascism directly insults all citizens and shows a basic ignorance of history, but also a misunderstanding of the danger that oblivion brings.
The Commissioner said that our people have never been anti-Semitic. Individual actions cause damage to the democratic society, and it is important that the perpetrators are found and sanctioned as soon as possible.
