Commissioner for the protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, strongly condemns the incident that happened in a school yard of elementary school in Belgrade. According to Danas daily newspaper, a group of eight grade pupils beat up a seventh grade pupil just because he is a member of the Roma national minority. Commissioner expects prompt and adequate reaction of all relevant authorities.
“The fact that violence occurred in school is worrying, because that is the place where children are supposed to be taught values of tolerance and accepting differences. Intensive work must be implemented in our schools aimed at developing young people’s awareness on respecting human rights of every individual”, said Commissioner Janković.
Commissioner underlines that every citizen who thinks that he or she suffered discrimination on any grounds, can file a complaint with the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality.
