Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, visited the National Council of the German National Minority in Sombor, where she discussed with representatives of the council the situation in the area of exercising the rights of this national minority, as well as mechanisms for protection against discrimination. The meeting was attended by Mihael Plac, President of the Council, Vladislav Turner, President of the Executive Board of the Council, as well as Milan Nikolić, adviser in the institution of the Commissioner.
At the meeting, it was concluded that members of the German national minority have no significant problems in exercising their rights and that the most important areas for equal participation in the community are education, information, and culture. The members of the council presented the activities they carry out, including a series of events. The importance of education for recognizing, preventing, and reacting to discrimination, which the institution of the Commissioner continuously organizes for representatives of national councils of national minorities, was also discussed.
The meeting was held as part of the plan to visit all national councils of national minorities in Serbia.
