In response to media reports about gatherings against foreign workers in Kragujevac, at which discriminatory views based on race, skin color, citizenship, and national affiliation could be heard, the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Milan Antonijević, points out that the expression of ideas and opinions that incite discrimination, hatred, or violence against individuals or groups of individuals on the grounds of their personal characteristics is prohibited.
Erecting walls of any kind certainly cannot solve any problem, but can only deepen it, the Commissioner warns.
It is extremely important to build a tolerant and humane society with strong institutions that need to react in a timely manner, and every case of discriminatory speech, hatred, xenophobia, or racism must be met with condemnation by all relevant actors and the public. Otherwise, fundamental human rights may be seriously called into question, emphasized Antonijević, who has planned a working visit to Kragujevac in the coming days.
