PUBLIC WARNING

The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, strongly condemns the attack on a Roma family that, according to media reports, took place in the village of Tavnik near Kraljevo, when several individuals physically and verbally assaulted this family, demanding that they leave their home.

All forms of violence, especially when motivated by hatred based on national, religious, ethnic, or any other affiliation, are strictly prohibited by law and require urgent, effective, and impartial action by the competent authorities, including prosecution and appropriate sanctions. It is unacceptable for victims of violence and discrimination to be forced to leave their homes and live in fear, emphasized Janković, adding that it is of utmost importance that the competent authorities promptly establish all facts, circumstances, and motives behind the attack, protect the family, and prosecute the perpetrators.

Only through consistent action by state institutions can we ensure that such incidents do not recur and that everyone is equally protected, because Serbia is a country for all its citizens, regardless of their national, ethnic, religious, or other affiliation, the Commissioner concluded.
