Brankica Janković, the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality condemns sexist insults and belittlements suffered by women politicians in some media outlets. The most recent incident involves reports and articles in local media referring to MP Marinika Tepić and Deputy Chairwoman of the Democratic Party of Serbia Dragana Rakić, who were previously targeted by the media in communities they live in.
The media have the obligation to report without discriminatory views and insults, stressed the Commissioner, adding that women politicians are exposed to misogynic, chauvinistic and offensive content on regular basis.
The Commissioner reiterated that public discourse must not contain such messages on account of which she warned the media once again that they have the obligation to abide by professional and ethical standards of reporting and that the local media outlets are governed by the same laws and regulations.
