Commissioner for the Protection of Equality Brankica Jankovic met with Ivanka Jovanovic, executive director of National Organization of Persons with Disabilities.
At the meeting, they discussed the problems that persons with disabilities are facing in everyday life and ways for resolving them, mentioning also the growing difficulties in the functioning of local organizations and members of the National Organization of Persons with Disabilities.
Ivanka Jovanovic announced that the National Organization of Persons with Disabilities will soon present results of the survey “Position of children with developmental difficulties and disabilities in the Republic of Serbia”, while Commissioner Jankovic stressed that this issue will be in the special focus of Commissioner for the Protection of Equality in the following year.
Commissioner emphasized the good cooperation with National Organization of Persons with Disabilities and supported activities of this organization, stressing that common activities contribute to the improvement of the position of this population. Complaints filed by civil society organizations are mentioned as the examples of good practice, as well as the recommendations of measures that were issued in proceedings upon these complaints, together with the importance of the civil sector in the improvement of the position of all sensitive, marginalized and minority groups.
Commissioner eventually concluded that, in such way, the possibilities are being created for citizens with disabilities in order to become active and equal members of our society.
