International Migrants Day was an opportunity for a discussion between the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Milan Antonijević, and the UNHCR Representative for Serbia, Soufiane Adjali, who, together with their associates, considered possibilities for further cooperation in the field of protecting the rights of migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers.

Everyone has the right to a dignified and safe life, and the protection of human rights must not be conditioned on race, religion, nationality, origin, or any other personal characteristic, Antonijević and Adjali agreed.

Following the Commissioner’s recommendation of measures addressed to banks, access to banking services for refugees and asylum seekers in Serbia was improved over the past year. After that, the Commissioner no longer received complaints on this basis, and all persons who contacted UNHCR and its partners for support during this period successfully opened bank accounts.
