The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, congratulates all Roma men and women in Serbia International Roma Day, saying that April 8 is an opportunity to point out that members of the Roma national minority are still marginalized and discriminated against. On that occasion, the project Roma Platform was presented by Roma Association of Zajecar and Association of Roma Students from Novi Sad. This platform was made with the aim to collect and monitor cases of discrimination and violence against Roma. The website romskaplatforma.rs contains a form for reporting discrimination, examples of successfully resolved cases of discrimination, as well as topics related to the position of Roma.
“This is one of the ways the institution wants to remind that the Roma community lives not only in Belgrade but throughout Serbia, and that it is almost everywhere invisible and faced with various denials of rights, which is why we strongly support activities that will contribute to better protection, as well as the organizations that are truly committed to improving the position of Roma in their communities, “Janković emphasized. According to her, in addition to more efficient and intensive work of the authorities, each of us can contribute to that cause and together we continue to build a society of humanity, equality and tolerance in which everyone is committed to respecting their own and other people’s human rights.
On the occasion of the International Roma Day and the celebration of 50 years of Roma activism in the world, the Commissioner participated in the Public Hearing in the National Assembly of Serbia, and will speak at the Ceremonial Academy at the National Theater entitled “Roma who made the world a better place”, jointly organized with the Ministry of Culture and Information, the Ministry of Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue, the National Council of the Roma National Minority and the organizations Roma Integration – Council for Regional Cooperation and the Roma Association.
