On the occasion of May 17, the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality Brankica Janković emphasizes that transgender people and members of the LGBTI population should not be discriminated against because of their gender identity or sexual orientation and states that any discrimination, including on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity is prohibited by law and must not be tolerated.
Janković points out that despite the positive developments in our society a lack of understanding for the difficulties that LGBTI persons face is still present.
Individuals, especially certain politicians and public figures continue to express insulting and belittling attitudes by which they continue to uphold prejudices against the LGBTI community, the Commissioner stresses, noting that they are part of our society and that we cannot ignore them and their rights.
