On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Municipality of Lazarevac organized a panel discussion entitled “The Position of Women in the Field of Inheritance”, at which the importance of economic independence for reducing the risk of gender-based violence and discrimination was emphasized, as well as the principle that the right to inherit must be equal for all.

Although the laws are clear, patriarchal tradition and stereotypes continue to prevail, which is why women often face condemnation and pressure to renounce their inheritance. It was stressed at the panel discussion that voluntary renunciation of inheritance carries serious consequences, including the loss of the right to social assistance. For this reason, it is of utmost importance that a person renouncing the right to inherit does so solely of their own free will and with full awareness of the consequences of that decision.

On behalf of the institution of the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, the “Guide Through the Right to Inheritance” was presented by Tatjana Prijić, Senior Adviser, while the event was also attended by Senior Adviser Sanja Stanković and Adviser Milan Nikolić.
