Intergenerational ties need to be nurtured, developed, and improved because older persons are not some other persons, they are us, as soon as tomorrow, said Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, at the ceremonial opening of the exhibition on the beauty of aging and intergenerational solidarity, in the House of Đura Jakšić, held on the occasion International Day of Older Persons. The installation of the photo exhibition “The Beauty of Aging” and drawings by the pupils of Elementary School “The Bridge of Understanding – Intergenerational Solidarity” was organized by the Citizens’ Association “Strength of Friendship” – Amity in partnership with the Photo Association of Serbia and the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality.
Friendships between members of different generations have a special place and importance in the lives of each of us, Janković pointed out and added that without intergenerational exchange, there is no good, quality life in the community. The way we treat age and older persons speaks about us as a society and the values we cherish, how much we respect the principle of equality before the law, and at the same time, what kind of world we want to live in, said the Commissioner.
The exhibited works illustrate the knowledge and skills of older persons, their emotions, and the dignity and beauty of aging, said the President of the Amity Executive Board, Nadežda Satarić, and pointed out that the organizer’s idea was to contribute to the perception of the positive aspects of the third life age, increasing intergenerational cooperation and solidarity, as well as reducing prejudices against the oldest population.
Vojislav Luković, Secretary of the Photo Association of Serbia, spoke at the opening of the exhibition, and the singing groups of the RTS Children’s Choir, the Christian humanitarian association Bread of Life, elementary school students from Belgrade with prize-winning works at the Bridge of Understanding Competition, and the Association of Belgrade Seniors and Toddlers participated in the festive program.
The exhibition will be open until Sunday, October 6, 2024, every day from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the House of Đura Jakšić in Skadarlija.
