As part of strengthening the capacity of the institution, the employees of the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality participated in a seminar called “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022”, which was held as part of the initiative launched by the European Union and the Council of Europe, to promote diversity and equality in Serbia.
Bearing in mind the importance of training employees and the intersectoral exchange of experiences, the seminar discussed the projects implemented by the Commissioner and their significance for promoting equality.
The work program included the presentation of the Recommendations of the Council of Ministers to the Council of Europe member states on measures to combat discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity, followed by the screening of and a discussion about a film about women and girls from rural areas, which was filmed as part of the project “Improving the position of women and girls in rural areas”.
The results of the research on hate speech in the media in Serbia from the “Report on the use of hate speech in the media in Serbia” were also presented, as well as the results of two two-day training sessions held for 50 media representatives at Divčibare and Sokobanja.
The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, spoke about the importance of the fight against discrimination and the role and strengthening of the institution’s capacity, while the following participated in the work with the employees: Ninoslav Mladenović, National Project Coordinator, Council of Europe, Evgenia Giakoumopoulou, Head of the Department for Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, Council of Europe, and Ivana Krstić, professor at the Faculty of Law in Belgrade.
