The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, has sent a recommendation of measures to the Prime Minister-designate, Dr. Đuro Macut, aimed at improving equality through gender-balanced representation of women and men in the future Government of the Republic of Serbia.
In line with international and national legal frameworks, balanced participation of women and men in decision-making is one of the priorities for the overall development of society. It ensures a fairer distribution of influence, allows for the utilization of the full capacity and potential of all citizens, and secures sustainable development.
Assessing the state of equality protection, the Commissioner’s institution included, in its 2024 Annual Report on the State of Equality Protection, a range of general recommendations to promote equality and combat discrimination. One such recommendation is the need to ensure and encourage equal representation of women and men in all areas of social life, especially in decision-making and public office at all levels, as well as to increase the participation of women in the security sector, particularly in decision-making positions within the military and police, stated Janković.
Assigning a greater number of ministries to the underrepresented gender — in addition to aligning with Serbia’s strategic commitments and adhering to issued recommendations — would demonstrate the Prime Minister-designate’s commitment to promoting equality and human rights. This includes achieving gender balance both in terms of the composition of the government and in the distribution of its ministerial portfolios, the Commissioner concluded.
