Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, gave lecture to students of the fourth year of the Faculty of Law in Belgrade on the role of the institution of the Commissioner in combating discrimination and protection of equality. Commissioner presented several examples from the institution’s practice as well as some of the cases where Commissioner responded by filing criminal charges. “Times we are living in are more challenging than ever before. Internet and social networks have opened new ways of communication and created space where everyone can express their opinion, but unfortunately to spread discrimination or hate speech as well. Also, contemporary achievements in medicine lead to longer life of humans, which may cause greater inter-generation misunderstanding. However, young people have different approach to technology and I hope – better ideas on how to use it”, said Commissioner Janković. She invited students to always react and instruct the person who suffered discrimination to file a complaint with the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality.
