Commissioner for Protection of Equality Brankica Jankovic condemns the marking of HIV status at the table at the patient’s bed in a manner which is against the regulations, with red marker and in capital letters, at departments of endocrinology and gastroenterology in the Clinical Center of Vojvodina. In this regard, Commissioner sent a recommendation to CC of Vojvodina to undertake measures in order to provide equal treatment of patients, guaranteed by the Constitution and laws.
It was emphasized in the recommendation of measures for the achievement of equality, which was sent to CC of Vojvodina, that the Strategy for the Prevention and Control of HIV Infection and AIDS in the Republic of Serbia, which was adopted last year, states that respecting and promotion of human rights of persons who are living with HIV, key populations in the risk of HIV and other sensitive social groups is of the outmost importance.
Union of the Organizations in Serbia that deal with the protection of persons who are living with HIV/AIDS appealed to Commissioner for Protection of Equality, indicating this case.
Commissioner stressed that persons who are living with HIV/AIDS have the right to health care and protection same as other citizens, as well as the right to non-discriminating treatment in any area of life, while health workers have a special responsibility in removing prejudices and suppressing the fear of persons who are living with HIV.
