Commissioner Janković’s Reaction: Emphasizing the Nationality of Incident Participants Deepens Stereotypes

Regarding various statements in the media about the incident that occurred in Novi Sad at the Catholic Port, in which four students sustained injuries, Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, stated that emphasizing the national affiliation of certain participants in the incident does not in any way contribute to a better understanding of the event itself.

In this way, attention is directed toward members of the Roma national minority, labeling them as people prone to violence, which results in the deepening of prejudice and stereotypes against the entire social group. Everyone who has committed any act of violence should be held accountable regardless of their national origin, Janković emphasized.

She also appealed to the media to report responsibly, without sensationalism or further fueling tensions.
