The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, participated in the international conference in Tirana, organized by the Regional Office of UN Women for Europe and Central Asia, entitled “Effective institutional mechanisms for the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women: picturing the future 30 years after Beijing”. The conference goal was to improve global cooperation in gender equality, the exchange of experiences and good practices, and the joint creation of strategies to improve women’s position in various aspects of society.
The Commissioner spoke about the successful regional cooperation of equality bodies in Southeast Europe, which was formalized 8 years ago in Belgrade, and cited the exchange of experts between the Serbian and Albanian equality institutions as an example of good practice. She also spoke about the importance of institutional protection against discrimination and the importance of partnerships with civil society, the academic and business sectors, the media, and policymakers to achieve the goals of the Beijing Declaration.
The conference was an opportunity to further strengthen international cooperation in the field of gender equality through the exchange of good practices and the joint creation of strategies that will improve women’s position in all spheres of society. The Beijing Declaration, which has been setting standards for women’s rights for 30 years, was the central point of the discussion, and commitment to its implementation and further progress in the fight for equality was confirmed.
