At the Student Cultural Center Novi Sad, in front of more than 100 teachers from 54 primary and secondary schools in this city, the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality organized the presentation of the Manual for Implementing Teaching on Protection from Discrimination and Promotion of Equality.
Through education that fosters tolerance, equality, and respect for diversity, we encourage young people to actively contribute to the fight against discrimination in their environment, said the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Milan Antonijević, expressing hope that the manual will be well received and that it will help teachers convey these values to their students.
The manual was developed as part of the project “Education for Equality”, which the Commissioner is implementing with the British Council, with the support of the Embassy of the United Kingdom in Belgrade and the Ministry of Education, within which numerous workshops were held in schools across Serbia during the past year.
The opening of the event was also addressed by the Minister of Education Dejan Vuk Stanković, who stated that one of the goals of the Ministry of Education is for preschool and school institutions to be places of equal opportunities for all children, and that content related to human rights, anti-discrimination, gender equality, critical reconsideration of stereotypes, and the development of personal identity is integrated into multiple subjects. Those present were also addressed by the Ambassador of the United Kingdom Edward Ferguson, who emphasized that we all need a little more understanding and empathy and thanked the teachers for the good cooperation that made it possible to implement this initiative.
Following the presentation of the manual, a workshop for teachers was held, led by Jelena Ružić, educator and director of the Women’s Association of the Kolubara District. Due to the great interest of schools, it is planned that workshops in schools will continue even after the completion of the project.
