The team Marcus Aurelius from the Faculty of Law, University of Niš, won the traditional “Moot Court” competition, a simulation of court proceedings in the field of protection against discrimination for final-year law students, held for the 12th time and organized by the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality with the support of the Serbian National Internet Domain Registry (RNIDS). This year’s topic was discrimination on social media, and competitors were tasked with representing their case before the judges.
The second-place team, Safo, also comes from the Niš Faculty of Law, while third place went to Hypatia from the Faculty of Law, University of Belgrade. The best speakers’ award went to Mila Jovanović and Kristina Stojanović from the winning team Marcus Aurelius.
The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, congratulated the awarded students for their excellent legal knowledge and persuasive arguments. Having dedicated students year after year who believe in the values of equality and non-discrimination, and who fight for justice and fairness, represents great hope and an investment in the prosperity of our society, Janković said.
The judges in the simulated trial were: Vida Petrović Škero, Dejan Ukropina, Ivana Ramić, Bosa Nenadić, Katarina Golubović, Relja Pantić, Danilo Krivokapić, Dejan Đukić, Kruna Savović, Nebojša Lazarević, Vesna Petrović, and Stefan Vladisavljev.
The “Moot Court” competition is the only event of its kind in Europe in the field of discrimination. It consists of drafting a lawsuit and a response to a lawsuit, as well as simulating a hearing based on a hypothetical case drawn from the Commissioner’s practice. The goal of this competition is to contribute to the development of legal education in this area and to the advancement of equality in the Republic of Serbia.
