The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Janković, attended the event Wheels of Progress, organized by Motor Heritage Consulting in cooperation with the Serbian Association for Historic Vehicles, with the participation of the School for Students with Visual Impairments “Veljko Ramadanović”, under the patronage of the institution of the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality.
During the event, students had the opportunity to ride as co-drivers in vintage cars, thanks to modern technologies – a special steering device and instructions in Braille provided by partners from Italy. This innovative approach demonstrated how technology can contribute to the empowerment and active participation of persons with disabilities in social life.
The Commissioner emphasized that children and persons with disabilities must be equal members of our society, although they often are not due to prejudices about their abilities. She pointed out that such prejudices are most quickly broken precisely through events like this one, which combine culture, sport, and technology, raising public awareness and changing established patterns of behavior. She underlined that new technologies, when used for the benefit of people, open new possibilities and enable persons with disabilities to achieve more than ever before.
She also reminded of the importance of the long-standing cooperation with teachers and students from the “Veljko Ramadanović” school and stressed that support and joint action are key for the potentials of children and young people with disabilities to become visible and recognized in the wider community.
